Blog: Fundraising Cycle Pilgrimage in France 2019
Edwin Gruber’s cycle pilgrimage in support of the school, 5-30th September 2019
Sixty-nine-year-old retired teacher Edwin Gruber, a dedicated supporter of the Druk Padma Karpo School, set himself the challenge of pedalling 2,500 kilometres through France in 25 days as a sponsored event for the school and made a blog of his experiences and reflections.
Edwin set off from the Channel coast and followed ancient pilgrimage routes via the Atlantic Coast and the foothills of the Pyrenees to the Mediterranean. Edwin channelled his passion for education into purposeful action. Edwin invited people to sponsor him for each metre of ascent along his route, which was over 15,000 metres, or for the whole trip.
Edwin first visited the school in 2001, a few months before it opened, and was enthusiastic about its educational aims and philosophy. He took four groups of pupils from St Christopher School in Letchworth, where he taught, to Ladakh, on each occasion supporting the school educationally and financially, and he has organised fundraising events while working as a teacher. He was looking forward to the cycle challenge and hoped it would provide an opportunity to actively support the school again. Edwin said of his cycle pilgrimage “Like in life, the actual journey is more important than any final destination”.

Indian model of United nations is a paramount catch word with the student's community across the country and needs no introduction as such. The role of this world class organisation is to simulate the participation of young Indians which is the students , to play active role in bringing about analytical debates, discussions and table solutions for all critical global disputes, whether peace keeping, disarmament or resolving any international issues faced by countries of the world . A Community Cleaning Drive for ENVIRONMENT DAY

The DPKS school has already taken its “ EXTRA-mile” two years before, when the campus consciously decided to take the big leap of effortfully making the school a Plastic and JUNK free zone . Thus the Dragonites did their big share of contributing in the times which stares grim on our faces with the frantically and alarming accelerating Environmental degrading issues. The campus of 1000 people consciously and unanimously choose not to have Canteens on campus, encourage 100% the Tiffin culture and admonishes the cruel and insolent littering habits, thus at DPKS it has become a norm to be Eco lovers as wished and propagated by our founding father and supported by Construction Designer at , London, whose entire idea is an ECO friendly world model school. Since, 5th June calls as a global day to dedicate our selves to the cleaning day drive (though a single day will not reap results). The senior students of the school went out on a community cleaning drive into our Shey village and were not very happy to have come across such ALARMING heaps of garbage dumped by the people so CALLOUSLY everywhere! The water SOURCE too were not spared. This drive was in ALLIANCE with the WATERKEEPER project in the HIMALAYAS, which has now been structured into our school ALMANAC under the guidance of Ms. Deachen (the water keeper officer). Thus the crusade against the pollution of environment takes its right place in the regular academics.
